I haven't read too much by Bradbury either, mostly his short stories - which I have really enjoyed. I quite liked this story and I am planning on reading the rest of The Martian Chronicles.

Thanks Jason - you have inspired at least 3 people!

This inspired me to buy The Martian Chronicles on audio so I can listen to the story. I read the book back in the 1960s and remember it very fondly. I went through a Bradbury phase back then and read many of his books, but I haven't really revisited him in all these years, except for the audio edition of his masterpiece Fahrenheit 451. Maybe it's time to go on another Bradbury kick. Thanks Jason for the push.

Carl, you should read Fahrenheit 451!

Thanks Greg,

Those two stories are excellent! I especially enjoyed the humor in "Killbot."

Keep up the good work - we'll be looking for your new story in Antipodean SF.

That is great! I love the concept of two authors sharing the stories that inspired them or meant something to them when they were younger.

I recently read my first ever Bradbury novel (possibly...I have a dim recollection of reading Something Wicked This Way Comes as a child). It was Dandelion Wine and I was just blown away by it. Loved it! I certainly want to check out more of his fiction (yes, I'm embarrassed, I haven't read Fahrenheit 451!)

It could be. By the way, here is the link where I first discovered the name Cordwainer Smith. Upon reading this I wanted to know what the fiction would be like of a man who wrote that:

I've added that to my list to check out as well, thanks for the link!

I just thing some people 'get' the ability to write good characters and for some that isn't their strong suit. I also think that readers bring a lot of themselves to the experience and for me personally, I am often open to that connection and possibly even finder deeper connections with some characters than a 'critic' would see in the short story. Perhaps that is one of the reasons I am drawn to them.

The other is that you can just have this incredible experience in a few pages and then go on, in an anthology for example, to have another incredible experience with a completely different author all in the space of a small amount of reading time. I love that.
