“Schrödinger’s Gun” is a 2015 science fiction short story by Ray Wood. It is about a detective who jumps through the multi-verse to track a killer.
The idea of Schrödinger’s Cat is pretty important to this story… well, part of the story anyway. So if you are unfamiliar with it, be sure to check out the concept at Wikipedia.
Detective O’Harren works for the Chicago police department, but she is not like other detectives. You see, she has a special implant that allows her to see many parallel universes at once. This is pretty handy when trying to solve crimes, because she can look into the multi-verse to find clues, and then jump between them to solve her cases. Nifty, huh?! But this latest turf war between the Rivers and the Montagnios has her stumped, and she can’t see any clear line through the ether either. (Ha!) Anyway, things aren’t looking so good, until she finds one piece of evidence that may help her see the light, so to speak. Now if those pesky properties of quantum mechanics would just stop interfering with official police work – geez!
My Two Cents
- Story: – The idea of using a Heisen implant to change universes was very cool! Plus the noir-style detective story kept the story light and fun.
- Writing: – Overall very solid writing. I liked how the author used some gangster vernacular to enhance the mood of the story.
- Fun Factor: – This was a great story to read, and I loved the noir feel combined with quantum mechanics. However, I had to take off 1 star for the ending – which I thought was a terrible let-down… just sayin’!
