The Hypersurface of this Decade by Bruce Sterling is a short story that reads like an YouTube unboxing video, created by a man on the verge of complete psychological collapse.

Non-Spoiler Summary:

A sad bastard who recently went through his divorce (and took it way worse than he thought) has moved his stuff (currently consisting of a laptop, a laptop charger and his iPhone) into the Silicon Toundabout, a post-modern hell created by weird technoartists. He’s perfectly fine and everything goes great with his life. He just doesn’t own anything, can’t cook and his landlord is a murderous bastard. Also, he keeps track of his wife to make sure she knows their marriage isn’t over.

He’s real healthy that way you see…

What I thought about this:

I know exactly how hard a divorce can be on a man. I lived through this via my family and saw exactly how horrible it is for a marriage to break down and know that it’s men who mostly suffer the brunt of the relationship collapsing. This story however, chooses to square the misery involved and instead add another layer of misery on top of everything: Unboxing videos. Imagine if you will, your entire life being this long, endless unboxing video that goes on forever, while you keep yourself occupied with your twitter and email accounts streaming.

Oh dear God, I need to stop thinking about it for a sec.
