It’s true. When I heard that Jason Sanford was looking for some people familiar with genre fiction to be preliminary judges in this year’s Million Writer’s Award I volunteered.
So, back in February I was accepted and jumped right in by reading several nominated stories. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the process. It seems that lately I am always reading short stories with a critical eye, and constantly thinking how I am going to review the story. But as I read through the nominated stories for this year’s award I very much enjoyed reading stories just for the sake of enjoying them!
I read several stories, some which sucked, some were so-so, some were good and some were great. Over the next month I would like to review and point out some of the stories I read which were of the speculative fiction genre, and ones I think my readers might enjoy. There are some truly talented writers out there and I encourage you to check out their amazing work.
If you enjoy reading great short stories of any genre, be sure to check out the Million Writers Notable Stories page. It is a treasure trove of not only great short stories, but also great online magazines which publish them. And don’t forget to visit the page on May 1st to cast your vote for one of the top 10 stories for this year’s award!
Enjoy,
-Rusty
