Every once in a while I come across a true gem of a short story web site. A site so good, and with so many free stories, that that I am sucked into it for hours. Such a site is Lewis Shiner’s Fiction Liberation Front. It is hands-down the best collection of writings I have ever seen an author put on the web. It is so good that when I visit other authors’ sites I hang my head and sigh, wishing that they could be as awesome as Fiction Liberation Front.
Is it really that awesome?
What makes this site so good you may ask? Well let me tell you:
- Everything on it is 100% free. You can download, read, print and even re-post these stories to your own web site – thanks to Mr. Shiner’s liberal use of the Creative Commons License. (Be sure to read his manifesto to see why he is doing this.)
- You can download these stories in a variety of formats, including easy-to-read HTML and PDF. Some of the stories even have audio versions and non-English translations.
- There are loads of high quality pieces by a famous author! These aren’t just the ramblings of some unknown person – oh no, several of these stories appeared in magazines like Asimov’s and Fantasy & Science Fiction. Here’s what you’ll find on the site right now:
- 1 entire novel – the highly acclaimed 2008 novel Black & White (see what others are saying at Amazon.com
)
- 54 short stories
- 9 pieces of non-fiction
- 2 screenplays
- 2 audio pieces
- 4 non-English translations
- 1 entire novel – the highly acclaimed 2008 novel Black & White (see what others are saying at Amazon.com
