Synarchy Book 1: The Awakening by DCS

Posted by Rusty  Published in Miscellaneous

Back in July I was contacted by an author, DCS, who asked if I would be willing to review her novel if she sent me a free copy. It sounded like a pretty cool story so I agreed. Now that I’ve read it, here are my thoughts about it.

A Blend Of Genres

Synarchy Book 1: The Awakening is, obviously, the first book in a planned series. It is very difficult to succinctly describe what the book is about, so let me quote the what the author told me:

front cover of Synarchy Book 1: The Awakening

“Synarchy, takes the reader into a world that is a blend of the metaphysical and conspiracy, fact and fiction. It is my goal to expose my readers to a reality that will make them rethink everything they believe about their own. The story takes place six months before December 21st, 2012, a date that has stirred up much controversy. An organized crime family through their own quest to dominate the world, discovers who the real players are that control humanity, and just how thick those chains are. Simply because they can, they decide to fight back against the New World Order, and ensure that by the winter solstice humanity has a choice it was never given before.”

… and from the back cover of the book itself:

“A plan is exposed, centuries in the making and so sinister not even the legend himself could have predicted the depth of its impact on the world. In his lifetime Stefano Terenzio had a merciless ambition for absolute power. Two generations later the shock wave he ignited was still being felt. Now, as the world inches closer to 2012 sides are chosen, families divide and an epic battle begins that will determine whether mankind continues existing in a world of lies or shatters the chains that have held us prisoner since his-story was written.”

My Two Cents…

  • The plot is somewhat complex, and the many characters in the book don’t make it any easier to follow. Add to that the fact that the story line jumps around from one set of characters to another and you’ll see why I was often confused by what was happening. Luckily, however, the author has provided a nice online chart of the Terenzio family tree, which I referred to often and found to be very helpful.
  • I am not a fan of stories with lots of profanity and gratuitous sex scenes. And there was plenty of both in this book – way too much for my tastes.
  • One thing I did like, however, was the mixing of science fiction, fantasy, mythology and crime genres. That made for some very interesting clashes – such as the people who simultaneously used high-tech gadgets and mythological creatures to deliver messages! Very cool indeed!
