As I look over the short story reviews I’ve done in the past year and a half, I realize that many of them are connected by some very strange themes. I thought it would be fun to point out some of these bizarrely connected stories… beginning today with Five Great Science Fiction Stories that Contain Talking Animals!
- Old MacDonald Had a Farm by Mike Resnick – A reporter visits a farm of genetically engineered super animals designed to solve the world’s shortage of food, but there is a big problem – they talk!
- In The Pound, Near Breaktime by Kent Brewster – Would you take your animal to the pound if it begged you not to?
- The Dog Said Bow-Wow by Michael Swanwick – A talking dog and his partner try to bilk Buckingham Palace out of some of its wealth.
- Evil Robot Monkey by Mary Robinette Kowal – A grumpy chimp antagonizes school kids.
- Sergeant Chip by Bradley Denton – A very special military dog gives his point of view about going to war.
If you know of any other science fiction stories that include talking animals please let us know by leaving a comment.
Enjoy!

Perhaps one of the most famous of the class – Saki’s “Tobermory”. I’d linked it quite a while back.
a lot of the Instrumentality stories by Cordwainer Smith (the ones featuring the Underpeople (as well as his novel, Norstrilia)).
the stories that comprise Clifford Simak’s City.
Ursula Le Guin’s stories included in Buffalo Gals and Other Animal Presences, especially “Buffalo Gals, Won’t You Come Out Tonight” and “The Author of the Acacia Seeds.”
the great graphic novel (not a story OK, but it’s short, anyway) WE3 by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely.
Gene Wolfe’s “No Planets Strike”
Thanks Tinkoo – I’ve never heard of that one, but I’ll be sure to check out Tobermory!
