Today’s post is a guest review by Greg Wickenhofer. Greg is the author of “Orbiter’s Reward” – one of the flash fiction stories I reviewed several months ago. After my post about his story he was kind enough to contact me and discuss his story and science fiction in general. I recently asked Greg “What is your favorite science fiction short story and why?” Here is his answer:
Greg’s Answer:
I have two favorites: 1) “Ender’s Game” – I actually read the novel first, which I thoroughly enjoyed, and then I looked up the short story, and 2) “The Merchant and the Alchemist’s Gate”, which is of course a novelette, but I read it in F&SF and enjoyed it as much as a short story. Both stories took me on an adventure where I was very curious all along the way as to what would be the final “punchline,” and yet each part of these stories entertained by itself. Both stories were great mental vacations that really took me to another time and place.
Rusty’s Two Cents:
Thanks, Greg, for pointing out two very excellent novelettes! I was the same way with “Ender’s Game” – I read the novel first and then found out years later that it was based on a short story. They were both excellent reading however. And, as you’ve probably heard by now, “The Merchant and the Alchemist’s Gate” won both the 2008 Nebula and Hugo Award for Best Novelette – very impressive.
Why not take a few moments and read my reviews of “Ender’s Game” and “The Merchant and the Alchemist’s Gate” – I include links to free versions of both stories so you can read them immediately.
And don’t forget to check out Greg’s awesome piece of flash fiction: “Orbiter’s Reward” (Seriously, it’ll only take a few minutes to read both my review and the story!)

I appreciate your kind words, Rusty. Please look for my flash fiction story, The Home Team, which will appear in Antipodean SF around November 2008. Links to a couple of my other stories follow.

Thanks Greg,
Those two stories are excellent! I especially enjoyed the humor in “Killbot.”
Keep up the good work – we’ll be looking for your new story in Antipodean SF.
